The 9 lessons COVID-19 has taught me – so far

By now, everyone has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in one way or another. It’s hard to remember a time when PPE and “flatten the curve” weren’t part of our daily dialogue. Multitudes have lost their livelihoods. Thousands have lost loved ones or paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Those fortunate enough to be working from home are adjusting to new ways of conducting business while sharing an office space with family members. Time away from the house for essential activities requires a new level of planning and caution.

I haven’t been out in public in almost four months. Wait…did I really just say that?

These quiet days of isolation and social distancing can be challenging and feel burdensome. But, if we’re observant and reflective, they can also be opportunities for gratitude, learning and growth. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • It’s a small world, after all.
  • Technology is incredible but cannot replace a hug.
  • A compromised immune system is nothing to sneeze at.
  • Don’t try to cut your own bangs.
  • The mind-body connection is real…both should be flexible.
  • There is always something to be grateful for.
  • Never underestimate the transformative power of a bit of blush and lipstick.
  • Service, in any form, is a noble endeavor.
  • There are no guarantees: today is a gift.

By most acccounts, this thing is going to be with us for quite some time. Sure, it’s frustrating at times to be cooped up at home, to abandon much anticipated summer vacations, to cautiously rethink every necessary errand. But resisting and complaining won’t change the situation, though many continue with the strategy.

Instead, I’m trying to accept this new normal and find the pearls within. Breathe, listen, contemplate, explore, stretch, question, observe. You’re bound to uncover something amazing. Keep digging.
